Ride-on theft puts show a cut behind

A NEW $30,000 lawn mower has been stolen from the Gympie Showgrounds less than a week before the Gympie Show.

Gympie Police told The Gympie Times yesterday the mower was thought to be taken some time between 4.45pm Thursday and 9.45am yesterday.

Police said thieves removed a padlock securing the Kubota front deck ride-on mower inside the Bob Hausen Garden Shed, which is behind the pavilion.

The mower is the property of the Race Course and Showgrounds Administration Committee.

Gympie Turf Club president Spencer Slatter said the heavy-duty mower was only bought a few months ago.

He said the pricey piece of machinery was bought with committee revenue and money from fundraising.

"It was something we'd been working towards for quite some time," Mr Slatter said.

With the Gympie Show less than one week away, Mr Slatter said the theft "couldn't have come at a worse time".

He said the committee would approach the council for assistance with the remaining pre-show lawn mowing.

Anyone with information about the stolen lawn mower should contact Gympie Police on 54801111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
