REVIEW: The Play That Goes Wrong is laugh-a-minute fun

EVERYONE loves an underdog, which is why you'll find yourself cheering on the The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society.

The amateur actors, and their director in particular, desperately want their production of The Murder At Haversham Manor to be a success.

But despite their best efforts to stage the 1920s murder mystery, opening night of the play is doomed from the start.

This is where the hilarity lies in the Australian production of The Play That Goes Wrong.

Brooke Satchwell and original UK cast member James Marlowe lead a talented cast in the popular British comedy, which is currently also playing on Broadway.

The show is essentially one long running joke, which sounds tiresome but the energetic casts keeps things ticking along with a seemingly never-ending series of gaffes and blunders.

The would-be thespians make up for their incompetence with a steely determination that the show will and must go on no matter how absurd things get - which is why by act two you'll be willing them to get to the end.

Some gags play out for minutes while others happen so quickly you nearly miss them.

If you like Fawlty Towers then you'll love this.

If not, then you're likely to suffer through the long set ups and awkward pauses.

There's a fair bit of theater in-humor going on here too, from people jumping forward in the script to set gags, misplaced props and technical mishaps.

After seeing the show in Sydney, QPAC's Concert Hall does feel a bit too big.

You really need to sit close to the stage to see and hear everything clearly, and appreciate some of the physical gags.

The Play That Goes Wrong is on at QPAC through May 14.
