Review of dog, cat importation policy

AFTER almost 20 years, the Federal Government will review the policy on importing dogs and cats or their semen into Australia.

The last review of its kind was held in 1993.

After that re-examination of the policy, the government allowed dogs and cats to be imported from more places around the world.

The current rules mean imported dogs and cats must stay in quarantine for between 30 to 120 days after arriving.

How long they spend there depends on their country of origin and its reputation for dealing with rabies.

This review could potentially cut that time to 10 days.

No changes will be made to policies until they have been fully reviewed.

The review will be open for public comment until September 24.
