REVEALED: Sunshine Coast's homeless capital

EVERY night 894 people are sleeping rough across the Sunshine Coast, with the most calling Nambour "home".

The region's homelessness is on the rise, up 134 people from 760 during the 2011 Census, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

Most, 162 people, live in Nambour with 218 in its broader region encompassing Bli Bli, Diddilibah, Rosemount, Eumundi and Yandina.

The next-highest population, 172 people in the Caloundra region with most in the town centre and Kings Beach.

Hundreds more are without a home in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland (165), Maroochy (163), Noosa Hinterland (68), Noosa (61) and Buderim (53) areas.

The ABS data is an estimate based on the 2016 Census, field interviewers counting homeless people via a special short form on Census night, and is supplemented by information from crisis accommodation providers and boarding houses.

"Persons staying temporarily with other households" account for more than half, 453, of all homeless people in the region; 101 in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and 95 in Caloundra.

Most people in "improvised dwellings, tents or sleeping out" live in Nambour (22 of 61), as do people in "supported accommodation" (90 of 183). Eleven of 30 people in "boarding houses" live in the Maroochy region spanning Coolum Beach to Mooloolaba.

The majority in "severely" crowded dwellings live in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland (39 of 121).

These are dwellings where four or more bedrooms are needed to adequately accommodate its household; for example 12 people living in a two-bedroom home.

Another 1069 people live in "other marginal housing": crowded dwellings, 451 people; other improvised dwellings, 123; caravan parks, 495.

The Sunshine Coast hinterland had the most people in crowded dwellings and caravan parks (85), while Noosa hinterland had the most people in improvised dwellings (70).
