Calls to restore after floods

DISASTER recovery expert Oliver Threlfall will meet with Gympie Regional Council today with ideas on how to best recover from a flood.

Mr Threlfall, the chief executive of disaster recovery enterprise Steamatic, said the lessons learnt during Gympie's floods should become the benchmark for future planning.

"Our organisation's... experience highlights the importance of restoration," he said. "It is not about rebuild, it is about restoration. It is vital for a community to begin to function effectively and for individuals to move back to normality as soon as possible."

He said state and local governments needed to move away from the bulldoze-and- rebuild mentality post-floods.
