Valley residents welcome rally

MARY Valley residents may be temporarily inconvenienced but most will welcome the positive attention and economic boost from the upcoming Imbil round of the 2010 Asia-Pacific Rally Championships, to be held on July 31 and August 1.

Gympie Region councillors at yesterday’s council Works and Services Committee meeting recommended approval of a rally organisers’ request to allow the closure of parts of Melawondi, Ernst and Sterling Roads for the competition.

Non-competitive aspects of the race organisation will also require closure on the Saturday of parts of Arthur and Edward Streets, Imbil.

The organisers told council in a letter formally received yesterday that “following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the Brisbane Sporting Car Club has been granted permission from the Federation Internationale l’Automobile to conduct a round of the 2010 Asia-Pacific Rally Championships titles”.

This makes the event one of only two international motor sports events to be conducted in Australia this year, they said.
