Republic cry has died down

WHILE most of Gympie enjoyed a day off yesterday to celebrate the Queen's birthday, the occasion prompted some to consider our allegiance to that lovely lady and our future as a nation.

It seems the Republican Movement and the debate over whether or not Australia should become one has slipped right off the radar; this is in no small part due to the huge popularity of the young British royals, William, Kate and baby George.

Hard to believe it's been 15 years since the referendum which rejected the notion, even though the support for a Republic back then had significant traction. Of course, when the man who headed the campaign to vote "yes", Malcolm Turnbull, finally ascends the Liberal throne and leads the nation, who knows what could happen. One would have to think the topic will be right back on the national agenda.
