POLICE responded to a report from a security guard that a man dressed in a clown outfit was scaring walkers around the Bluewater Trail near Caneland Central on Sunday night.

Just after 7pm police attended the area to try and locate the person, who was reportedly carrying a knife or weapon, but was unable to find anyone matching the description in the surrounding areas.

While they could not confirm the Bluewater Trail incident happened tonight, a Queensland Police spokesman issued the following statement in relation to other recent sightings:

"The Queensland Police Service has received reports of concerning behaviour involving people dressing up as clowns with the intent to scare others.

"While there have been no reports of physical threats or acts of violence involving 'clowns', police will not tolerate anyone engaging in intimidating or anti-social behaviour.

"Police will treat all reported matters seriously and people need to be aware that by engaging in these activities, they may be committing criminal offences or become victims of crime themselves."

If you see anyone carrying a weapon in public or making threats to the public's safety or acting suspiciously, it is an offence and needs to be reported to the police immediately.

Phone 000 in life-threatening situations or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
