Read the label, urges naturopath
HEALTH Nut naturopath Michael Smith learnt first-hand the importance of knowing what is in the food you are eating.
Mr Smith suffered health problems as a young adult because he was unaware of the role nutrition played in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
He said after getting help from a naturopath to deal with the health problems he was experiencing, he was inspired to take up the career himself.
"I was basically working a lot and not eating right and I was tired and run down," Mr Smith said.
He has now been a naturopath and a nutritionist for 12 years and has worked in the Gladstone region for eight of those and he has never looked back.
In his role as naturopath for the Health Nut, Mr Smith said he worked with people to get their diet and nutritional needs right and educate them on food labels.
"People come to me after and say they've spent an hour in the supermarket because they didn't realise how much junk was in the processed foods they were eating."
He said it was important for everyone to become educated on how to read food labels, not just people with medical conditions such as heart disease, cholesterol problems and diabetes.
"People who are younger are a really good group to teach so they won't develop these problems.
"Preventative medicine is always better," Mr Smith said.
Although people were often referred by their doctor to see a naturopath, Mr Smith said most of his business came from word of mouth.
As well as people with health conditions, he said he assisted people who were suffering from stress, exhaustion and weight loss.
