Editorial: Rates news great for battlers

Editorial: WELL at least one of my prayers for 2015 may be answered today.

Gympie Regional Council rates look like they won't soar further this year.

In fact, if the vote goes in favour of the budget today they should stay at about the same level this year as last year.

Since amalgamation in 2008 there have been eight rate rises.

The first rate rise after amalgamation was about 13%, the second close to 19% and every rise since then has been 5% or more.

It's no wonder ratepayers are struggling to make ends meet and pay the twice yearly impost.

Today's news, along with the reintroduction of the 10% early payment discount, will give battlers some much needed breathing space.

Council needs to back up this modest increase with a few more in coming budgets.

It's the only way pensioners and low income earners will be able to survive.
