Rally Qld to hit Imbil forestry
GYMPIE motor sport fans have much to look forward to with the Imbil forestry again hosting a round of the International Rally of Queensland later this year.
The rally is round four of the 2010 FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, also incorporating the Australian Rally Championship and Queensland Rally Championship.
Running from July 30 – August 1, the event is Australia’s biggest championship rally of the year and, after the Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix, the only other Australian round of an FIA championship.
This year’s event is tipped to be one of its biggest following confirmation world rally stars Chris Atkinson and Alister McRae will take part.
Caloundra will see the event get underway with a spectator-friendly Super Special Stage under light followed by a breakfast “pit stop” in Kenilworth.
After these lead-in events, the rally kicks into high gear by arriving in the Mary Valley township of Imbil for a series of special stages.
With some time remaining before the rally arrives, organisers are in a race of their own searching for a naming sponsor.
The exposure of the rally and Mary Valley for the Imbil round will be significant, with television coverage being beamed to more than 55 countries, including China, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and across Europe.
