Rain brings out nightmarish Toowoomba trapdoor spider

THE rain is known to bring out creepy crawlies but the spider that emerged after the recent rain is the stuff of nightmares.

Charlie Spagalli was at a gathering in Maidenwell, South Burnett, at a campgrounds when he came across what he believed to be a Toowoomba trapdoor spider.

With a body of about five centimetres and even longer legs the spider spanned to be bigger than a human hand.

Mr Spagalli said the photos made it look even bigger than it was but it was still a shock to come across.

"It was probably only about four or five centimetres in body size, not including the legs. It was still a rather large looking spider, being so robust," he said.

Most people would run away screaming but not Mr Spagalli.

He has a fear of spiders, like most reasonable people, but he got up close with the eight-legged creature in a bid to squash his fears.

"I didn't think I would get so up close and personal to a big meaty hairy spider so soon," he said.

"I was scared but excited as it was a beautiful animal."

He then released the spider, placing it away from the campgound so nobody would hurt it
