Funding allocatd for rail trail from Goomeri to Kilkivan

IN 2014 the state government announced $2 million for a rail trail between Kingaroy and Kilkivan following the old rail corridor.

That money has since been confirmed by the new State Government.

The apportionment of the funding provides for $1.4 million for Murgon to Kingaroy and $600,000 for Murgon to Kilkivan, with the emphasis on the section from Goomeri to Kilkivan.

A memorandum of understanding will be entered into between Gympie Regional Council and South Burnett Regional Council. Negotiations also need to be held with adjoining landowners.

The section from Kilkivan to Goomeri is 27.6km and is aimed at maximising the benefit to both townships. The $600,000 will be given to the South Burnett council who, in accordance with the MOU, will pass it on to the Gympie council.

Ongoing maintenance will be required which could be in the order of $50,000 a year.
