Race horse trainer loses licence over cruelty allegations

BREAKING: A Sunshine Coast horse trainer has had his Thoroughbred Trainer's Licence suspended following allegations he drowned a four-month-old foal.

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission moved to suspend the 56-year-old Yandina man's licence after he was charged with serious animal cruelty on Wednesday, along with breach of duty of care and wilful damages.

QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett said the Commission worked in conjunction with the Queensland Racing Crime Squad, the State Crime Command and Integrity Regulatory Unit Stewards on an extensive investigation into the alleged drowning.

"Following the charges, we have reviewed this man's status as a racing industry participant and moved to suspend him until these serious charges are dealt with," he said.

"In accordance with the Commission's Thoroughbred Standard for a licensing scheme, it may immediately suspend any licence where allegations or charges of a criminal nature which require the Commission to exercise a duty of care to participants or animals or to safeguard the integrity of the Queensland racing industry.

"The Standard, endorsed by the QRIC on 1 July 2016, also states that an applicant must be assessed as a fit and proper person to be granted a licence, including the ability to display good character and operate within the laws and regulations of the State of Queensland.

"As the charges of are of a serious and criminal nature the Commission has suspended the charged man's Thoroughbred Trainer's licence, effective immediately."

The man is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on February 22.

Serious animal cruelty carries a maximum penalty of seven years jail.
