Questions over Newman's interests

A FORMER NSW National Trust director's fight to block a $20 million development has raised questions about the timing of the Queensland Opposition Leader Campbell Newman's conflict of interest declarations.

For months Mr Newman, the former Brisbane lord mayor, has fobbed off Labor attacks over potential conflicts involving his wife's family's extensive business interests.

One of those interests is a controversial multi-storey luxury apartment development overlooking historic homes and proposed by his father-in-law, Dr Frank Monsour, in Spring Hill, one of Brisbane's oldest suburbs.

Mr Newman last year said as lord mayor he had declared his potential conflict of interest over the development by writing to the then chief executive Jude Munro in a letter dated May 30, 2005 - as soon as the application went to the council.

Mr Newman wrote that he wanted his interest placed on the record and the fact that neither he nor any of his staff had discussed it and would not be doing so in the future.
