Unique Qld jersey up for auction
A FRAMED Queensland State of Origin jersey signed by all 12 captains since the birth of Origin in 1980 will go under the hammer in Gympie later this month.
The jersey will be up for auction at the Gympie Cooloola Rugby League Club’s 100 Years of League in Gympie celebratory dinner, to be held at the Gympie Civic Centre on June 25.
Gympie Rugby League junior president Ross Groundwater said the jersey was an “extremely rare” item to go under the hammer.
“I don’t imagine there would be too many of them around,” he said.
“It’s an impressive piece and I think it will attract a lot of attention on the night.”
Tickets for the dinner have been selling fast and as of yesterday evening, were close to being completely sold out.
Groundwater said should anyone miss out on a ticket, they could still be in the running for the chance to own the signed jersey.
“We want to give everyone as much chance to win the jersey, even if they don’t get tickets to the night,” he said.
Phone bidding will be accepted by those unable to attend the dinner.
To register interest, league fans need to contact Ross Groundwater on 5482 5466.
“We will have phones for registered bidders and we will ring them when the auction gets underway,” Groundwater said.
The dinner itself is shaping up to be standout night for rugby league in Gympie.
While Gympie’s long history with the game will be celebrated, the night will also incorporate the Birth of Origin Show, featuring Tommy Raudonikis and ‘Big’ Artie Beetson.
The day following, Albert Park will play host to a super Saturday of rugby league, including a televised QCup game at 2pm on the ABC between City and Country. Entry to the games will be $6.
