Queensland drivers shamed for lack of restraint

THE number of Queenslanders fined for failing to correctly restrain children in cars is shocking.

This week we released Department of Transport and Main Roads data which showed Queensland Police booked almost 2400 drivers for the offence over a 12-month period.

I'll admit, I was baffled by the number. As a childless person, it's difficult to understand why it is so hard for parents to buckle their kids up correctly.

Speaking with one of our road safety advisors, who has young children of his own, helped me better-understand the complexities of the issue.

"It's not as simple as saying these parents are irresponsible,” he said.

"There are plenty of parents, grandparents and carers out there who think they're doing the right thing, but are getting it wrong. Ultimately we have an education problem and need to make sure all carers understand how to safely restrain a child.”

If you are unsure about how to safely restrain a child, or want to have your child restraint professionally fitted, visit an RACQ Child Restraint Fitting Centre. It will be vital in protecting your most vulnerable passengers in the event of a crash.
