Queensland a big winner on budget night

QUEENSLAND Treasurer Tim Nicholls showed a post-budget breakfast crowd his relief that multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects in Toowoomba, Rockhampton and Mackay will soon be underway.

This state was one of the biggest winners on budget night securing more than $13 billion towards infrastructure projects across the state over the next six-years.

The infrastructure spend included $6.7 billion for the Bruce Hwy, $1.3 billion for the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, $1 billion for the Gateway Upgrade North and $508 million for the Warrego Hwy.

Though the Federal Government has fast-tracked the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing as one of its top 10 priorities, forward estimates reveal almost half of the Bruce Hwy funding will not be delivered for at least five years.

Mr Nicholls, talking at an annual budget breakfast in Brisbane on Wednesday said it was about time the state received its fair share of the funding pie.

"We fully welcome the funding made available for the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing," he said.

"Almost $1.3 billion will be invested in opening up the food bowl of the Darling Downs and mining in the Surat Basin."

Mr Nicholls said the multi-billion dollar Bruce Hwy upgrade was long overdue.

"This will be welcomed by everyone, particularly by those in the regional centres like Rockhampton and Mackay," he said.

"These areas flood regularly and residents know what it means to be left high and dry while flood waters rise around them."

Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson claimed the infrastructure funding would deliver more capacity, safety and flood mitigation projects across the state.
