A quarter of us are obese

AUSTRALIANS live longer and drink more, but are less active than other similar countries around the world.

When compared against other Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development countries, Australia was ranked equal fourth with Israel for life expectancy in 2009 behind Japan, Switzerland and Spain.

An Australian Bureau of Statistics report released on Tuesday also found Australians aged 15 years or over consumed 10.3 litres of pure alcohol per person in 2008, compared to an OECD average 9.6 litres.

With 25% of Australians obese, this country is higher than the 18% OECD average.

But Australian smoking rates are lower with 17% of people aged 15 or more smoking compared to a 21% OECD average.
