Quake-damaged retirement village will be razed

EARTHQUAKE damage at a New Zealand retirement village has forced the company to demolish an entire block of 40 units.

The Figaro Apartments in the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville had to be evacuated following last week's earthquake, and now Ryman Healthcare has decided the damage is too bad to repair.

Corporate Affairs manager David King said it would take about 18 months to demolish and rebuild, and residents would be rehomed in that time.

Work started yesterday on the other Wellington building due to be torn down, a nine-storey office block in Molesworth St in the CBD.

On Wednesday, the largest office building in Wellington, the 15-storey Asteron Centre, was evacuated amid structural fears.

Alternative work spaces are being arranged for the hundreds of office workers kicked out of the building, which is home to the Inland Revenue, the Civil Aviation Authority, Suncorp and Callaghan Innovation.

One hundred Callaghan Innovation employees have been moved to its Lower Hutt offices.

They were allowed in on Wednesday night to grab computers and things they needed.

Spokesman Ian Butler said they were expecting to be out for weeks rather than days.
