QLD Minister flies to rebuild live cattle export trade

QUEENSLAND Minister for Agriculture John McVeigh will fly out today to help rebuild our Live Cattle Trade with Indonesia.

The four day trip will include meetings with the Indonesian Agricultural and Trade Ministers as well on site visits to feedlots, wet markets and supermarkets.

Mr McVeigh said restoring market access to the Indonesian Live Cattle market was the most important thing that could be done to help restore profitability for north west Queensland cattle producers.

"The loss of live exports to Indonesia was the catalyst for the loss of market access and oversupply of cattle that is now putting immense pressure on drought-stricken paddocks and cattle prices," Mr McVeigh said.

Mr McVeigh said Federal Labor Minister for Agriculture Joe Ludwig had given up on Australia's live cattle trade.

"We need to do what we can to rebuild Government to Government relationships with our closest beef trading partner," he said.

"Clearly Joe Ludwig and Federal Labor have no interest in getting the trade back to where it was before the ban they imposed suddenly two years ago.

"I will be meeting with Indonesian Minister for Agriculture Suswono and Indonesian Minister for Trade Gita Wirjawan, and will also visit a feedlot, abattoir, wet market and supermarket.

"At the end of the day what we have to do as the State Government is step up where the Federal Labor government has failed to act - it's all about starting the rebuilding of a strong relationship with Indonesia."
