Prisoner star Maggie Kirkpatrick to fight child sex charges

MAGGIE Kirkpatrick, the actress who played The Freak on television soapie Prisoner, says she will fight to clear her name after being charged with child sex offences.

The television star, who has also starred in Hey Dad! and Home and Away, will face court in August, News Corp reported.

Victoria Police's Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team charged Kirkpatrick, 74, with two counts of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency with a person under the age of 16.

The charges reportedly relate to an incident in the 1980s involving a 13-year-old girl, who police sources said was not connected to the entertainment industry.

Kirkpatrick, a regular fixture in TV series including All Saints, Pizza, Blue Heelers and Water Rats, vowed yesterday to prove her innocence.

"I need to go to court to have this ridiculous situation quashed," she told the Herald Sun from her home in Sydney's northwest.
