'Pretty young girls' often roped into 'drug running'

A NORTH Mackay admin worker had no criminal record before she dated a violent drug trafficker and became embroiled in his illicit enterprise, a court was told.

Cassandra Gay Edmonds helped distribute both methamphetamines (ice) and marijuana in early 2017, while suffering continual domestic violence.

Justice Graeme Crow told the Supreme Court in Mackay it's not unusual for "pretty young girls" to be drawn into "drug running" at the whim of oppressive partners.

Edmonds pleaded guilty to 10 counts of supplying drugs over about a month in the court on Monday and one of possessing utensils, ahead of her ex-partner's sentencing.

Several family members watched on from the public gallery, visibly devastated.

While supplying the drug ice can muster a maximum penalty of up to 20 years imprisonment, Edmonds' relatively "low-level" offending resulted in her walking free.

Prosecutor Phil McCarthy said Edmonds' actions became known when police attended her and her then-boyfriend's unit looking for another person on May 14, 2017.

Ice and marijuana was found (in small amounts, alongside a single MDMA pill) and police were able to piece together evidence from text and MMS messages on Edmonds and her boyfriend's phones.

Defence barrister Scott McLennan said Edmonds had been "doing this for a domestically abusive boyfriend" and didn't profit.

Edmonds' "happy and productive" life "spiralled out of control" and she fell into drug use in the "toxic" relationship, which she had since ended.

Justice Crow noted Edmonds' involvement was "subject to (her partner's) influence, but may have placed others in the same position of drug dependence she found herself in.

He did take into account early pleas, a terminal illness suffered by Edmonds' family member and the fact Edmonds had passed three drug tests, and had largely rehabilitated.

Edmonds was sentenced to an 18 month overarching prison term, suspended entirely for 18 months.
