Kirk considers his retirement

ONE of Football Gympie’s biggest seasons on record comes to a spectacular close today with grand final action.

And for president Trevor Kirk, it’s time to consider his options in the sport.

Kirk said next season would “definitely” be his last as president in what would be his 20th year holding the position. However, if someone stands up to challenge Kirk for the position in 2011, he promises to happily stand aside.

“If someone wants to do the job next season I will stand aside,” he said. “But no one has for the last 19 years so I think will be hitting the 20 year mark,” he chuckled.

Kirk has overseen many changes to the club in his time as president and this season has been no different. Showered with plenty of awards for his volunteering and devotion to the game, Kirk said he wanted to ensure one thing before he left office.

“I want to see the Gympie Fire Under 19 side get off the ground,” he said.

Meanwhile, today’s grand final matches will be held for all competitive age divisions, starting with the junior ranks before progressing to the seniors.

A hotly contested final between Columbia and Golden City in the Men’s Division 1 final will cap off a bumper program.

Kirk said he favoured Columbia for the title but didn’t rule Golden City out of the race.

“Anything can happen in a final so I think Columbia will need to play their best to bring it home,” he said.

Columbia is captained by Joel Bond while at the helm of Golden City is Darrly Cash.

While heavy rain yesterday had Kirk looking nervously at the skies, he said games would proceed “no matter what”.
