Port the clear winner as trade period comes to close

PORT Adelaide finally got its man on the last day of the trade period, securing ruckman/forward Paddy Ryder from Essendon for picks 17 and 37 in what could prove to be the most important deal for any club.

Essendon subsequently on-traded selection 37 to the Western Bulldogs for 2008 Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney.

The Bombers also picked up Giants ruckman Jonathan Giles as a replacement for Ryder.

Port was the clear winner in the deal, however, with Ryder (pictured) providing the missing piece of the premiership puzzle for the Power which desperately needed another big man to help out overworked ruckman Matthew Lobbe.

The other clubs to emerge on the right side of the ledger were Brisbane, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, Melbourne and the Bulldogs.

Brisbane gained two quality midfielders who can kick goals in Dayne Beams (from Collingwood) and Allen Christensen (Geelong), giving up veteran defender Joel Patfull (Giants) and pick No.5.

The Suns gained premiership player Nick Malceski (Sydney) and hard nut Mitch Hallahan (Hawthorn), and still has picks eight and 15.

Hawthorn secured A-grader James Frawley (Melbourne), and 2012 No.2 draft pick Jono O'Rourke (GWS), although its first draft selection is No.31.

As well as picking up small forward Jeff Garlett (Carlton), utility Heretier Lumumba (Collingwood) and defender Sam Frost (GWS), Melbourne received selection three for Frawley to go with No.2 which it already had.

The Dogs might prove to be the biggest winners of all though, securing young forward Tom Boyd (GWS) in exchange for disgruntled skipper Ryan Griffen and pick No.6.

With the highly-promising Marcus Bontempelli and Boyd in the line-up, the new Dogs coach, whoever that may be, will have two potential superstar forwards to build a premiership team around in the next three or four years.
