Pool opens for long hot summer

THE water may be still a cool 19 degrees, but the Gympie Memorial Swimming Pool will re-open its doors from tomorrow.

Lessee Jeff Manthey said the water was only cool when you first got in but after that it was beautiful and perfect for swimming.

And with the onset of what looks like a long, hot summer, Jeff said the Gympie Memorial Pool was the best place to come and cool off or work off those few extra kilos put on over winter.

“I did 10 laps yesterday. The first lap was cool but after that it was great,” he said.

During the off season, the pool has undergone renovations to the change rooms, making them more user friendly.

Jeff says everything has had a new coat of paint and looks fresh and modern.

“The old change rooms used to be like a dungeon,” he said.

“With the new paint job they look more open and airier.”

Swimming Club will hold a sign on at the pool this afternoon from 4.30pm and he urges any budding Ian Thorpes or Stephanie Rices to come along and join up.

Gympie Regional Council was putting finishing touches on some tiling around the pool surrounds yesterday.

“After they have finished that I can give everything a good hose down to open,” Jeff said.
