Police union demands apology over rape claims

THE Queensland Police Union has demanded an apology from Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington after she criticised an officer investigating a gang rape.

In May this year, Ms Frecklington wrote to the head of the Crime and Corruption Commission asking for an external investigation into the destruction of evidence in the 1995 case.

Important evidence, including CCTV, most of the rape kit, statements and the woman's clothing were lost, ABC reported.

One of the investigators, Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Fenelon is being investigating for his handling of the case.

In what police later said was a mistake, Det Snr Sgt Fenelon also received a Queensland Police Meritorious Service Medal earlier this year for his work training sex crime investigators.

Queensland Police Service Commissioner Katrina Carroll stripped Det Snr Sgt Fenelon of the honour days later.

In the latest edition of the Queensland Police Union Journal, published this month, President Ian Leavers demanded an apology from Ms Frecklington.

"Just when I thought I had seen it all, I witnessed the Opposition Leader, who I thought was usually supportive of police, Deb Frecklington launch an extraordinary tirade against one of our members, Chris Fenelon," Mr Leavers wrote.

"The Opposition Leader, a former solicitor, should know better that unless you have the facts leave it alone until you do or even better, leave hard working police officers out of it and just do your job you've been elected to do.

"The damage Deb has done to the career of a lifelong police officer is unacceptable and I await her apology."

Significant column inches were also devoted to criticising Ms Frecklington by vice president Shane Prior, who called the Opposition Leader's actions "a disgrace".

A spokesman for Ms Frecklington said "there is no bigger supporter of the police" than the LNP.

"But when concerning issues are raised it is important to get to the bottom of it to ensure people can maintain the highest confidence in our police," the spokesman said.

"The Police Commissioner stepping in and removing the medal while the investigation is still underway was the right course of action."
