Police officer fatally shot

TWO men are in custody after a policeman was fatally shot at Tamworth, in north-western New South Wales, this morning.

The 41-year-old highway patrol officer sustained a number of gunshot wounds outside a block of flats in Lorraine Street, West Tamworth, just before 8am today.

Police from Oxley local Area Command and NSW Ambulance Paramedics immediately responded to the incident and located the officer and another injured man.

Both were treated at the scene before being taken to Tamworth Base Hospital.

The police officer died a short time later.

The other man remains under police guard as he receives emergency treatment.

A crime scene was secured at the residence.

Police launched a search for another man, who was seen leaving the area immediately after the incident.
He was arrested a short time later and taken to Tamworth Police Station.

A Critical Incident Investigation Team has been formed by Homicide Squad and Western Region detectives to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
