Pipe bomb blast maims teenagers

TWO teenagers were left with severe burns and one of them may lose his foot after a homemade bomb exploded in a Gatton shed at the weekend.

Lockyer District High School students Alex Toohill and Josh Barton, aged 14 and 15, were in a shed at a property in Hill Street at 4.30pm on Saturday when the device exploded and caused severe injuries to their lower legs and feet.

Queensland Ambulance Service shift supervisor Kirk Binnington said amputation was an unfortunate possibility.

“The youths suffered burns to the entire upper section of their bodies and had parts missing from their legs,” Mr Binnington said.

“Depending on what surgery can do for them, a foot may have to be amputated.”

Gatton police senior constable Ken Driver said it was unknown if the youths were the ones who had manufactured the homemade bomb.

“All we know is that the teens were heading to a party and stopped off at the shed before they left the house,” Snr Cnst. Driver said.

“The parents heard a loud explosion coming from the shed and came running out to see what had happened.”

Mr Driver said the family at the Hill Street residence were unaware of any explosive devices being kept in the shed and police had been unable to talk to the two teenagers.

The two teens are currently in a stable condition at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.
