OUR VIEW: Petersen true to himself to the end
DEFIANT to the end, and true to his sense of "right" and justice, Ian Petersen's final act at the final meeting of the Gympie Regional Council yesterday was to move a motion of no confidence in CEO Bernard Smith.
The motion failed for want of a seconder, but being a lone voice has never held Cr Petersen back.
Rightly or wrongly, he has always argued passionately for what he believed in.
After 19 years in the job, he has had enough, and is ready to enjoy some rest and relaxation. God knows he has earned it.
It is my belief that most people enter politics with noble intentions.
Some people are born into it and follow a career path, but most would-be councillors throw their hat in the ring because they want to serve their community.
Sure, there are probably smarter, more successful people out there we would like to see step up to the plate; but they don't.
So to those who are prepared to put their necks out and cop the flack and scrutiny, thank you.
Good on you, and good luck.
And Larry and Ian, we will miss you.
