Petero gets dream finish to league career

FORMER Kangaroos prop Petero Civoniceva will play against his old teammates for the last time when Fiji takes on Australia in the Rugby League World Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.

Fiji (pictured) earned its place in the semis after downing Samoa 22-4 yesterday morning, while the Kangaroos overpowered the US 62-0.

Penrith back Wes Naiqama was one of the stars for the Bati with a try and five goals, while Cowboys winger Antonio Winterstein scored the only try for Samoa.

After the match, Civoniceva said he was thrilled to have the chance to play at Wembley in what is likely to be his final game, unless of course Fiji pulls off what would be one of the biggest upsets in the game's history.

"It's a great feeling to know that potentially my last game will be played at (one of) two amazing venues," the 37-year-old warrior said. "I feel I've been very blessed. I started this rugby league ride in 1998 and to be still here, I feel very proud of that.

"I'm really looking forward to enjoying the week, taking it all in with my teammates."

Fiji's victory is expected to earn the island nation a place in the Four Nations series in Australia next year, coach Rick Stone saying that opportunity would be important for the development of the game.

"It would be great to get an invitation to do that," Stone said.

Australia beat Fiji 34-2 in the group games earlier in the World Cup.

England will take on New Zealand in the other semi-final, also on Saturday night.
