Gympie MP weighs in on car rego increase
GYMPIE drivers will pay up to $600 a year for car registration after the Labor Government voted to keep the increase, Gympie MP Tony Perrett said yesterday.
Mr Perrett said every Labor MP voted to increase the cost of car registration by two-and-a-half times the inflation rate, costing drivers up to $600 a year from July 1.
The LNP moved a disallowance motion to stop the 3.5% increase to car registration.
"I know how tough it is for families trying to pay bills due to the rising cost of living," Mr Perrett said.
"Every dollar counts.
"Gympie families are not affluent and these increases are not easily absorbed.
"This measure hits families and workers in this region especially hard as we do not have the privilege of choosing between using a car or public transport.
"Using a car is a necessity and any increase unreasonably impacts residents of Gympie," he said.
"The previous Labor Government had increased registration fees by 30% over four years," Mr Perrett said.
"When the LNP came into Government we worked hard to keep costs as low as possible by freezing family car registration for three years."
