Penney drops on the Bullets again

BASKETBALL: Much had changed since the Brisbane Bullets last played an NBL match in Auckland, almost nine years ago to the day.

But one thing has remained constant and shows no signs of deviation - Kirk Penney knows how to knock down the three-ball.

Having scored 20 points in that win over the Bullets in 2007, Penney (pictured) was a familiar menace at Vector Arena, downing six threes from 12 attempts in a season-high haul of 30 to help the Breakers to a 86-70 win.

The Bullets did well to fight back several times. After an early onslaught by the hosts, the visitors took a one-point lead into the second term, and then after the hosts regained control and led by nine at the half, Brisbane was just four points behind at the last change.

But, in an electric three-minute spell to begin the final period, a quickfire trio of triples from that man Penney lifted the lead to a comfortable 11 and ensured history did indeed repeat.

Bullets coach Andrej Lemanis, who was at the helm of the Breakers between 2005 and 2013, described Penney as "someone who likes to rise to those occasions”.

"I had the pleasure of being the recipient coach of that on quite a few occasions,” he said.

"Now I'm on the flip side of it, it doesn't feel quite as good.”

Jermaine Beale (16) led the scoring for the Bullets, who are now 3-4 and host the Kings on Thursday night.

Sydney hosts Cairns to complete round five on Monday night.
