Parliament banter turns to footy

A QUESTION about whether community groups could use a former fire station at Nambour turned into a parliament back-patting for a rugby win over NSW.

Not the main game but Sunshine Coast police Superintendent Terry Borland coaching the police State of Origin team against NSW.

Nicklin MP Peter Wellington asked during parliament question time for the alternate use until the police service needed to use the site to expand and upgrade the Nambour police station.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey said the fire station, which the previous government bought because it was next door to the police station, had a number of maintenance issues.

He said there could therefore be liability and insurance issues with community groups or not-for-profit organisations using the building in the interim.

"We do not want to put anyone at risk in the old building," he said.

"We are more than happy to consider any application from a community group - to help them and to help the good community of Nambour."

But the Bundaberg MP thought it was the perfect time to give NSW a dig as he suggested community members contact Mr Borland about whether they could use the building.

"The match celebrated 150 years of policing in NSW," he said.

"The Queensland police beat the mighty NSW team. I believe the score was 28-8.

"It was a great result for morale within the police service ... (which) went into the match as underdogs.

"In relation to the question, yes, the community can contact the police and we will do whatever we can because we believe in working with the community."
