Park in prison on corruption claims

FORMER South Korean president Park Geun-hye has been arrested and jailed over corruption allegations.

Impeached in December and formally removed from office in March by the Constitutional Court, Ms Park was taken to a detention facility after the Seoul Central District Court granted prosecutors' request to arrest her.

The first democratically elected South Korean leader to be thrown out of office, Ms Park is accused of colluding with Choi Soon-sil, the daughter of her late mentor and Church of Eternal Life cult leader Choi Tae-min, to extort money from big businesses, and taking a bribe from one company.

She could face more than 10 years in prison if found guilty.

The arrest and detention is another humiliation for Ms Park, who was elected in 2012 as South Korea's first female president.

Enraged by the allegations, millions of South Koreans protested in the streets every weekend for months before her impeachment in December and eventual removal from office in March.

Samsung Group chief Jay Y Lee has also been arrested over his alleged role in the corruption scandal.
