This is what it's like to steal a croc's eggs (Hint: Snappy)

ICONIC Territory croc wrangler Matt Wright has taken part in Crocosaurus Cove's annual crocodile egg collection, prying more than a dozen eggs from the guard of resident salties Will and Kate

It was no easy feat - four park staff warded off the royal reptiles while Wright removed the clutch of eggs on Wednesday.

He said the broody parents were exhibiting natural behaviour.

"It's that time of the year, it's quite warm, quite humid. Crocodiles are crocs I guess, both of them are protecting their nest," he said.

The fertilised eggs go back towards the community through the Darwin Crocodile Farm's conservation program in Noonamah.

"It's a commercial incentive-driven program, it's the best in the world. It's brought the population of crocs from 4000 up to about 140,000 now in the wild … it also looks after local communities, helping them farm some eggs with the assistance of local croc farms," Wright said.

The collection isn't just for show but is a necessity in the tropical climate.

"We try and collect as much as we can early before the rain, because once we get that we either lose them in the floods or they overheat."
