Our youth on agenda

FUTURE youth forums are being planned after a successful beginning to a series of workshops on issues affecting young people in the region.

Monday's Youth Forum held at the Gympie Civic Centre was well attended by representatives from local schools, community agencies, and government services. Information from the workshop is being collated and fed back to inform them of the barriers young people face in the Gympie area.

In particular, the obstacles that stop them from successfully completing education and/or going on to further training or employment. A working group will be formed from the project, which will be responsible for working towards addressing issues and priorities identified at the forum.

Some of the issues which were open for group discussion were: social issues affecting the engagement of young people; barriers hindering them from succeeding in school, training or employment; and support services needed to increase their potential.

Discussions were about what was working and not working with suggestions offered to increase support for young people. The project was organised by the Dept of Education and Training regional youth supporter Carol Gollschewsky, Gympie Council's Youth and Community Development officer Matt Allard and Uniting Care's Heather Cummings.
