Meet the cutest new recruit for the thin blue line

SENIOR Constable Brendon Dellow will have his hands full over the next few months.

He has just taken on his twelfth puppy for training, a nine-week-old dutch shepherd named Castro, and was bred by Kampftrieb Kennels in South Australia.

The pup was flown up to Queensland to be raised and developed as a police dog.

The pup will work with Snr Const Dellow until the animal is 16 months old.

Already Castro is in training.

"As soon as I get him at eight weeks we start training for small article searches and by 10 weeks old we will start basic grass tracking exercises," Snr Const Dellow said.

"By seven months he will have a foundation in tracking, bite work, obedience and article searching."

Snr Const Dellow said it was entertaining to watch the puppies' behaviour at times.

"One of my pups got a bit excited, and tried to chase our laying chickens at home."

Castro has visited the Maryborough Police Station and is already a hit with the officers.

Snr Const Dellow said he almost always had a puppy in his care, in addition to his operational police dog.

"I have raised around 12 puppies so I am used to handing them back," he said.

"I know they are going to have a great life so I don't feel any sadness giving them up.

"That said, sometimes I would like to keep certain pups."
