Orphaned joey saved by rescuers
THIS furry bundle of cuteness was rescued by the Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue team near Kandanga on Thursday.
Ray Chambers and his brother Murray travel all over Queensland rescuing injured or sick koalas and taking them to carers or the Australia Zoo animal hospital to heal and then be released back into the wild.
Ray Chambers said yesterday this male joey was seen with his mum on Sunday morning near Kandanga, and then he was seen without his mum on Monday.
"We picked him up (on the side of the road) on Thursday, so he had four days on his own," Mr Chambers said.
The joey, who weighs 1.2kg and is about 13 months old, was suffering from "slight dehydration" when Mr Chambers picked him up.
He will spend about 12 months with a wildlife carer in the Gympie region before being released back into the bush near Kandanga.
"He's a cute little tacker," Mr Chambers said yesterday. "I hope he pulls through."
The joey was "in good spirits" and only a "little dehydrated", so his chances were good, he said.
Nobody knows what has happened to his mother.
