One dog found dead on front doorstep and another stolen

A MACKAY man has offered a $3000 reward after one of his pit bulls was found dead on his front doorstep at Ooralea and the other stolen on Monday morning.

Shayne Phie, 23, was working at North Goonyella mine when his housemate David Niblett, 26, called him in tears to deliver the news that rattled them both.

Shayne immediately left work to return home to find his missing four-year-old dog, Punter, and deal with the death of three-year-old Luna.

"I was just rattled. This has left me in such a state I can't even cope," he said. "My dogs mean more to me than anything and I can't see how this could have happened."

The men buried Luna in the back yard with her dog bed, drink bowl, favourite chew toy and name tag and placed a flower pot on the grave.

They said Luna was bleeding from the nose and her skin turned darker.

"I'm trying to stay positive, at least I know what's happened to one dog," Shayne said.

"Not knowing is the worst part... nothing makes sense."

While they reported the incident to the police immediately, Shayne said it was hard to say if it had been a targeted attack.

The majority of the neighbourhood residents had dogs and it was and extremely friendly community, he said.

Shayne is remaining hopeful he will find Punter, after handing out hundreds of flyers around Mackay and all the way to Moranbah.

He also posted on social media in an attempt to find Punter and has had an overwhelming response in return.

"A list of people are saying I'll chip in (money for the reward) if we can get him back, everyone is being really handy about it."

"He's literally my best mate... we sit here and have a beer, the dogs sit next to us and we just watch the world go by," he said.

"Just give my dog... that's all that matters. I feel lost without them, it's definitely not right."
