One man dead in head-on crash

ANOTHER Sunshine Coast man was fighting for his life after a head-on smash yesterday morning on the D’Aguilar Highway, south of the Sunshine Coast.

The accident, which happened about 5.30am west of Kilcoy, also took the life of a 35-year-old Ipswich man.

A 40-year-old Ninderry man was in a serious condition in Caboolture Hospital after the two-vehicle crash, about five minutes west of the Somerset Dam turnoff.

The Ipswich driver, who had to be cut from his vehicle by emergency services, was flown by helicopter to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

It is believed he died about noon yesterday.

The victims were the only occupants of the cars.

The man had suspected chest injuries, an ambulance spokeswoman said.

Initial investigations indicated the sedan, driven by the Ipswich man, crossed to the other side of the road and into the path of the utility, police said.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours.

The Forensic Crash Unit was continuing its investigations.

Two men injured in a four-vehicle head-on accident near Mount Coolum on Wednesday were still in a serious condition in Brisbane yesterday.

Hunchy teenager Nickolas Wilksch, 17, and 48-year-old Cootharaba man, Peter Riley, remained in the Royal Brisbane Hospital yesterday.

They had to be cut from their vehicles after the crash on the Sunshine Motorway, which happened about 7am.

The AGL Action Rescue team and EMQ Rescue 500 airlifted the pair to Brisbane.

A hospital spokesman said both men were in a critical but stable condition last night.

Late yesterday afternoon, police said they clocked a man driving a vehicle at 140kmh at the site of Wednesday’s head-on smash.

The Sunshine Motorway has a 100kmh limit in the area.

Police said the man was driving home in a work vehicle when he was pulled over near Mount Coolum.
