Golden Oldies take down Gympie Silvers at Albert Park
GYMPIE Silvers over-40s cricket team met with some tough competition on Sunday for a 50-overs match against the Queensland Cricket Club Golden Oldies at Albert Park.
The visitors, which featured former Sheffield Shield players Peter Clifford, Mark Gaskell and Col Cooke, were first up to bat and were 2-125 by the end of 25 overs.
The locals took to the crease next for the first half of their 50 overs, however the Silvers could manage only 4-89.
When the Queensland team stepped in to finish their overs, they ended up with 265.
Clifford, Queensland's man of the match, top-scored with 54 while Gill Chapman ran up 43 and Pat Cartey 35.
Silvers' Clinto Snell (3-48), Rod Cartwright (2-36) and Tony 'Tiger' Doyle (1-14), who also took two catches, were the pick of the bowlers.
The Silvers totalled 250, with Ross Chapman top-scoring with 50 not out.
Peter Bambling was the Silvers' man of the match after taking two wickets and making 39 runs.
Silvers' Glyn Brook said some good bowling from Queensland wasn't enough to dampen an enjoyable day of cricket.
He said the Silvers plan to make the match an annual fixture.
