O'Connor delighted with athletes

GYMPIE Amateur Athletics coach Lesley O’Connor is full of pride for the 23 club members headed to Townsville later this month for the state championships.

While a major fundraiser for the trip, a golf day at the Gympie Pines Golf Course tomorrow, was hanging in limbo yesterday owing the wet weather, O’Connor said she excited about the prospects for Gympie’s batch of amateur athletes.

“I’m so proud of them and I really think they are going to do very well,” she said.

“So many of the kids have really excelled this season and I’m going to be just waiting to hear how they go.”

O’Connor said a number of new members to the club also stood an equal chance of impressing.

“The new members to the club have been working hard and they will be in there too with a good shot,” she said.

Sending 23 athletes from a total of 26 to qualify is by far the Gympie club’s best result in recent years largely due to the unrelenting dedication of O’Connor at weekly training sessions.
