Nurse charged with stealing

A NURSE has been charged after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from more than 20 patients at Bundaberg Hospital during an 18-month period.

Bundaberg Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Joe Hildred said the man was charged

following a search of his home in North Bundaberg on June 29.

"A number of items were located at the residence in relation to alleged ongoing stealing offences at the Bundaberg Hospital," he said.

"It will be alleged that whilst he worked there over 18 months, a number of patients at the hospital had discovered money or their ATM and credit cards had been stolen."

The nurse has also been accused of using patients' credit cards and withdrawing money.

"They were infrequent thefts," Det Snr Sgt Hildred said.

The nurse will face Bundaberg Magistrates Court on July 27 to answer to 16 charges in total - eight of stealing and eight of fraud.

"It is expected the man will face further charges as investigations continue," he said.

"It is possible that other thefts have occurred that were not reported."

Det Snr Sgt Hildred said detectives had been investigating the alleged thefts for up to 18 months in what had been a complex matter to deal with.

"The management of the hospital worked closely with police during this investigation, and detectives were highly appreciative of their assistance," he said.

Det Snr Sgt Hildred said the investigation had been difficult because there had been so many patients, as well as employed staff, at the hospital.

"Patients and staff, in some instances, had dual access to the various areas where the thefts occurred," he said.

"The hospital treats hundred of patients."

Bundaberg Hospital operational executive Luke Worth said it would be inappropriate to comment on the incident, as it was now before the courts.

"The nurse has been suspended," he said.
