NSW banana industry in danger of disappearing

LAST week's visit by executives of the Australian Banana Growers Council (ABGC) has done little to address concerns of local growers.

At last Thursday's meeting local growers sought answers from the ABGC as to why NSW fruit sold for substantially less than Queensland fruit.

ABGC chairman Doug Philips said he was confident a new strategic plan would address the concerns of locals.

"The meeting was an excellent opportunity for us to discuss what actions need to be taken," Mr Phillips said

However Korora banana grower Paul Shoker was not impressed and warned if things continued the way they had, there wouldn't be a banana industry in a few years time.

"They didn't really answer some the questions directly," Mr Shoker said.

"They sidestepped a few of the issues but they said they will look at some of the wholesaling issues, speci- fically at the prices of NSW bananas, which is a start.

"On the levy commitments there is a clear disagreement.

"Another thing that the council doesn't want to address is the number of growers who are dropping out of the industry. We've probably only got two to five years left of a banana industry here, because that's the way things are now."
