No snag in sausage success
IT APPEARS connoisseurs of the humble snag have plenty to choose from in the Gympie region.
Three local butchers have come home with major awards in the latest Sunshine Coast Sausage King competition held in Hervey Bay on the weekend.
Newly appointed apprentice butcher at Shaw's Meats, Megan Bambling, was one of the big winners.
Megan won gold with the butcher shop's famous chicken chive and garlic sausage and bronze with the lamb, pumpkin, fetta and shallots snag.
Megan said she was really excited about her gold medal winning chicken sausages.
"It was a surprise," Megan said.
"It was my first year and I wasn't too confident."
She said the secret to a good sausage was a great recipe and quality ingredients.
Megan's boss and uncle, Kev Shaw, said he was proud of Megan's work.
He said she started her career by doing a traineeship while going to school at St Patrick's College.
Megan said she loved all aspects of being a butcher, especially the people.
"It's very demanding, but good."
Southside butcher, McIntosh Meats, was another winner. Matt and Amanda Stevenson won bronze with their plain pork sausage.
Amanda said the competition was "fierce".
It was the third time they had won bronze with their pork sausages.
"We haven't yet been able to nail the gold," Amanda said.
""It was massive this year, there was so many entries.
"We were blessed to get an award."
Kilkivan Meats also cleaned up on the weekend, winning gold in the continental and silver in the lamb and poultry.
Owners Luke and Katherine King said they were very excited about the win for their Kilkivan butcher shop.
