No ‘likes’ from police after Bay man's Facebook vent

ASHLEY Roger Hermann will have to keep a closer eye on his Facebook privacy settings if he wants to stay on the right side of the law.

Hermann pleaded guilty in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court to using a carriage service to cause offence, after he vented his anger online against Sergeant Ian Grigoris from the police dog squad.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Michael Quirk said Hermann posted two offensive messages directed at Sgt Grigoris on Facebook on March 22.

"Don't even look at me Ian I will kick you and your German Shepard in the face," read the first message.

"You wait till your (sic) not wearing your uniform... I'm going cave your pig face in," read the second.

Hermann's solicitor Allan Mallard said it came as a shock to his client that these messages were able to be viewed by anyone on Facebook.

"At the time he thought they were only available to his friends," Mr Mallard said.

Mr Mallard said all Hermann was doing was venting, and he never thought the comments would be seen by any police officers.

The messages were about Sgt Grigoris, not directed towards him, Mr Mallard said.

The court heard Hermann and Sgt Grigoris had crossed paths a week before the Facebook messages.

Mr Mallard said his client objected to Sgt Grigoris' treatment of him after being intercepted for a random drug check.

A week later, Mr Mallard said Sgt Grigoris intercepted Hermann again, and the young man felt he was being harassed.

Hermann was fined $350, but Magistrate Graham Hillan agreed not to record a conviction, due to Hermann's previous lack of criminal history.
