Probation for bashing

“WHAT makes you guys think you own a girl? She’s quite free to do whatever she wants.”

Magistrate Maxine Baldwin said it made her stomach churn to know three young men ganged up and bashed a guy because he was having a relationship with one of their ex-girlfriends.

“And what makes you think it’s so brave to (gang up) on someone, three on one? The whole thing is incomprehensible.”

Jeremy Ryan McEwan, 21, was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm while in company early on May 8 when he and two mates were pointed out by their victim to police.

They had followed him earlier to Nelson Reserve, where they set upon him and attacked him until a passer-by broke it up.

Police noticed McEwan’s knuckles were swollen and he admitted punching the man in the back of the head. McEwan, of Rose Street, Gympie, was placed on probation for six months.
