No doubt about Devils

THE Gympie Devils and Noosa Pirates have almost as much on the line tomorrow as they would before the finals.

The teams will face-off in the annual A grade Royal Mail Shield.

Gympie and Noosa play each other for the shield every year, and tomorrow is the day for action.

As well as competing for the shield, the Devils, in fifth position, vie to up their ranking to as high as third.

Devils president Jim Bougoure said he had confidence in the boys to pull off a win.

"If the boys turn up ready to play, then we have the team to do it, there's no doubt," he said.

In their first game of the season against Noosa, the Devis had the match until an intercept from Noosa turned into a sprint down the length of the field and a game-ending try.

With any luck the extra pressure of claiming the shield will spur the boys towards a win, which will put them in a better position as they head into the second half of the season.

Bougoure said last week's big win against Caloundra should give them extra confidence when they take the field tomorrow.

He said the return of James Hogan, Tim Wyvill and coach Kris Kahler will also boost the side.

"They will strengthen the side even further," he said.

Bougoure said the team was depleted last week in the absence of Hogan, Wyvill and Kahler which made the win "even sweeter".

The Devlis also welcome back Kurt McArthur, who played his first game back in Gympie with the reserve team, but will step up to A grade against Noosa.

Bougoure said McArthur's versatility is a great asset for the Devils.

"He brings a lot more dynamics to the bench amd gives Kris [Kahler] more options," he said.

Nick Swan is also back after recovering from injury.

"I'm looking forward to seeing more of him as he settles into his roll as full-back," Bougoure said.

Despite this being an away game, Bougoure expects a big crowd for the shield and hopes to see a big Gympie-crowd turnout.

The Devils play Noosa at Noosa at 3pm.
