THREE abandoned dogs stole the hearts of many after they were found in an industrial bin at Council's Ballandean Transfer Station.
A photo of the dogs on the SDRC Facebook page went viral with more than 90,000 views and over 800 shares.
Those shares led to hundreds of phone calls to council from residents who wanted to rehome the three pups.
The dogs have since been given a new start with Animal Rescue Queensland who offered to take them in.
Council's acting director planning and environment Mr Tim O'Brien said while a good outcome had been achieved in the end, this incident was avoidable.
"Both of council's animal pounds in Stanthorpe and Warwick have drop-off boxes that are accessible by the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so there's no excuse to abandon animals in a rubbish bin," he said.
Council would also like to remind residents about the responsibility of pet ownership.
